Detailed information on Vintage Persian Tabriz Rug

This rug comes from Tabriz, a city in northwestern Iran that has been weaving since at least the 12th century, making it one of the oldest continuous weaving traditions in all of Persia. During the Safavid dynasty, Tabriz weavers were commissioned to produce rugs for royal palaces and important holy sites. The reputation built then has never left.

These are city rugs, made by professional weavers who spent years mastering their craft. The designs were family knowledge, passed down through generations and woven entirely from memory. Each weaving family treated their patterns as heirlooms, and the motifs carried meaning, weeping willows for love, oak trees for strength and courage, pomegranates for abundance and luck. What looks like decoration is actually a language.

This rug is hand-knotted from wool on a cotton foundation. The construction is dense and tightly woven, producing a surface that holds its detail and wears exceptionally well over time. As a vintage piece, the colours have already softened and the pile has settled. What you are looking at has been improving since it was made.
