It is actually a myth that opossums hang upside down from their tails. While it is true that they have prehensile tails, and can use them in that way, they mostly curl their tails up for carrying leaves and sticks to make a nest. They use their tails sort of like an extra arm and carry all kinds of things around with them. This little baby wanted to play in the apple tree and climb amongst the ivy vines with her sweet tail. A pink tourmaline, purple amethyst, and green peridot mimic the spring flower colors around her.

Opossums are amazing creatures and so misunderstood! They are the clean up crew for our planet. It is these fluffy creatures that help clean up the stuff that nobody else wants to. They help eat the ticks in our backyards and don\'t get enough recognition for that. It is commonly thought that Virginia opossums carry rabies and that is not true. They hold a lower body temperature (94-97 degrees!) that the virus just cannot survive in. Because they are being displaced from their normal habitat in the south of the US, they are coming up north to find safer places to live, and it is too cold for them here.
