The MIJ16 Genseki Selvedge is a 19oz unsanforized Japanese selvedge denim built around texture, density, and long-term evolution. “Genseki” translates to raw ore, an unrefined material pulled straight from the earth, and that idea runs through every part of this fabric. From the first wear, it feels dense, rough, and heavily textured, with a surface that’s visibly alive.

Woven using aggressively slubby and neppy yarns, the denim shows pronounced irregularity throughout. Low-tension weaving allows the fibers to relax and shift on the loom, amplifying the uneven texture and preserving the fabric’s natural hairiness. Beneath the indigo rope-dyed warp sits an earthy-toned weft that adds warmth and depth, giving the denim a richer visual contrast that becomes more expressive as it fades.

To retain the fabric’s raw character while removing sizing uncertainty, the MIJ16 is Tempi-treated. This process removes shrinkage while maintaining the denim’s coarse hand, surface texture, and structural integrity. The result is a fabric that stays true to its unsanforized nature, both in feel and appearance.

Details are executed at a level expected from the Made in Japan line. The selvedge edge features an indigo–red–indigo micro-busted line, with a narrower selvedge width that lets the warp color run closer to the edge. Hardware is all metal, with iron buttons that will rust over time and copper rivets that oxidize naturally with wear. Raised belt loops, a selvedge button fly, peekaboo selvedge coin pocket, two-tone stitching, and a chainstitched hem round out the construction. A Japanese sheepskin leather patch with the “Flower of Carnage” logo and maple leaf embroidery on the back pocket finish the piece.

From a fading perspective, the MIJ16 stands alongside the most celebrated MIJ releases. Expect sharp contrast, deep creasing, and a dramatic shift in surface character as the denim breaks in. The transformation is slow, deliberate, and rewarding, revealing more complexity with every wear.

Fit Notes: This series felt like a very traditional Naked & Famous fit to us. Tommy is wearing his standard Easy Guy size of 33. Obviously, the waist is quite roomy and would require quite a bit of cinching with a belt. We would recommend sticking with your \"normal\" size on this one if you know it and keeping a close eye on the waist if you don\'t.  Tommy is 5\'9\", 165lbs with a 33-34\" waist.
