This limited-quantity loose leaf green tea is sustainably grown on a 43-acre cooperative farm in Trongsa, Bhutan, operated entirely by women. This isn\'t just a tea farm—it\'s a model of community empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and economic development that aligns with Bhutan\'s GNH principles.
The women who run this cooperative are farmers, business owners, and community leaders. They make decisions collectively about cultivation, processing, pricing, and distribution. The cooperative provides them with:
- Fair wages and profit-sharing- Skills training in organic agriculture and tea processing- Leadership development opportunities- Healthcare and education support for their families- A voice in their community\'s economic future
By purchasing this tea, you\'re directly supporting these women and their families, contributing to a model of development that prioritizes people and planet alongside profit.
Artisan Processing: Hand-Picked, Pan-Fired, Rolled
Each tea leaf is carefully hand-picked by the women of the cooperative during the optimal harvest window. They select only the finest young leaves and buds, ensuring peak flavor and quality.
After plucking, the leaves are immediately pan-fired—a traditional Chinese processing method that halts oxidation and preserves the tea\'s vibrant green color and fresh character. The pan-firing is done by hand in large woks heated over wood fires, requiring skill, timing, and constant attention.
While still warm and pliable from pan-firing, the leaves are hand-rolled into delicate, twisted shapes. This rolling releases the leaves\' essential oils and shapes them for optimal infusion. The rolling technique has been passed down through generations, and each tea maker develops their own style and rhythm.
Finally, the leaves are dried to lock in their flavor and preserve them for storage. The entire process—from plucking to final drying—is completed within hours, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor.
Traditional Bhutanese Cuisine:
- Momo: Bhutanese dumplings filled with vegetables, cheese, or meat. The tea\'s clean finish refreshes the palate between bites.
- Phaksha Paa: Pork with red chilies, a spicy Bhutanese staple. The tea\'s gentle character provides relief from the heat.
- Goen Hogay: Cucumber salad with chilies and cheese. The tea\'s fresh notes complement the salad\'s crisp character.
- Juma with Red Rice: Sausage served with Bhutan\'s distinctive red rice. The tea\'s subtle spice notes harmonize with the dish.
- Khur-le: Bhutanese pancakes, especially delicious when sprinkled with lemon zest that echoes the tea\'s citrus notes.

Green Tea Antioxidants: Rich in catechins (especially EGCG) and polyphenols that support cellular health and combat oxidative stress.
L-Theanine: This amino acid promotes calm focus and mental clarity, creating a state of relaxed alertness perfect for meditation or focused work.
Moderate Caffeine: Provides gentle, sustained energy without jitters or crashes.
Pure & Organic: Grown without chemical pesticides or fertilizers in Bhutan\'s pristine environment. This is tea as nature intended.
Holistic Wellness: In line with Bhutan\'s Gross National Happiness philosophy, this tea supports not just physical health but overall wellbeing—mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual connection.
Store in an airtight container away from light, heat, moisture, and strong odors. Green tea is particularly sensitive to oxidation, so proper storage is essential.
Properly stored, Gross National Happiness tea maintains its character for 6-12 months. We recommend enjoying it within 6 months of opening for peak freshness and flavor.
For optimal preservation, consider storing in the refrigerator in an airtight, opaque container. Allow the tea to come to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.
