\"マーニ\"は南西諸島に分布するヤシ科の植物（クロツグ、コミノクロツグの方言名）で、葉鞘の繊維は耐水性に強く、かつてはサバニのアンカーロープに利用され、葉は籠や玩具の材料に、また茎の芯は食用にもなるなど沖縄では生活に密着した重要な植物です。近年西表島などで確認される南方系の蝶ルリモンジャノメの食草でもあります。
【 注染 (ちゅうせん) 手ぬぐい】 注染という伝統的な手法で手作業で制作しています。注染とは、特殊な糊で防染した生地に染料を注ぎ込み、模様部分にだけ必要な色染めをする型染めです。 片面しか色がのらないプリントと違って、注染は糸自体を染めるので、表・裏がないのが最大の特徴です。職人が手間と時間をかけて手仕事で染め上げる。だからこそ仕上がりが違います。プリントでは出すことができない色合いや染料の柔らかさ、にじみが注染にはあります。１枚１枚違う手仕事の味わい深さ。そして使い込むほどに馴染む柔らかさをお楽しみください。
