Traveling Man Treasures Curiosity Vault is selling this wonderful vintage (c. 1950s) hand-carved milk container known as Akarum among the Turkana and Samburu tribes that live in the Turkana District of the Rift Valley in Kenya. The jug is missing its lid and has a broken section as shown, but still makes a beautiful addition to any African collection!
The Akarum are fashioned similar to gourds, but are actually wood. These containers were treasured, mended when broken, and used for years. Milk jugs like thisĀ play a vital role in these tribal societies. These containers are carried everywhere and are one of the mostĀ important elements of their everyday nutrition. They are also used during the initiation of young men when they are called to drink the fresh blood of the cow mixed with milk.
